How are pets' personalities determined?
There are broadly two aspects to a pet's personality: their SCP and their personality traits.
SCP (an abbreviation of "script") is what determines the kinds of animations the pet will do. For example the Orange Shorthair SCP will react to the camera with one of the 'scared poses' and a Chinchilla Persian SCP will cause a pet to occasionally throw tantrums! You cannot mix SCPs. Every pet has just one of the distinct base game SCPs even if it is called a "mixed breed" in its profile.

Personality traits are a set of values that every pet has that influence their behaviour.
The traits relevant to personality are:
Liveliness
Playfulness
Independence
Confidence
Naughtiness
Acrobaticness
Patience
Kindness
Nurturing
Finickiness
Intelligence
Messiness
Quirkiness
Insanity
Constitution
Metabolism
Dogginess
In addition to these, there are a handful of traits that seem to be related to breeding but they are not yet fully understood.
The base game breeds are set to come out of the Adoption Centre with a randomised value for each of these traits within some range. For example Orange Shorthairs always have low confidence, which makes them tremble as they walk, and low independence, which makes them prone to jealous rage!

Through breeding or hexing, it is possible to combine the effects of SCP and personality traits in a variety of interesting ways. Take my cat Scampi here...
Scampi has an Alley Cat SCP but has a low value for the confidence trait! That's why Scampi trembles and looks worried one moment, and goes full angry Alley on us the next!
How can I find out what my pet's SCP and personality traits are?
The most reliable way to discover your pet's SCP is to open up their .pet file in LNZPro. Expand the LNZ section and then scroll down the right until you come to a section that looks like the screenshot below. The [Breed Name] will be your pet's SCP (in this case Orange Shorthair).
Your pet's personality traits are a little trickier to view but Reflet made a very handy program that makes it easy! You can download it from this thread (and also read more about personality traits!).
Note that Reflet's program also gives a breed for each pet. However, the breed listed there is NOT necessarily the pet's SCP so always double check this with LNZPro!
